If the pas de’ armes is to be between two lords or regions the company, or noble lord issuing the challenge shall send a message to the challenged stating the following:
Live message:
“Very noble and powerful _________(Duke,Baron,etc) and redoubted lord, the very noble and powerful_________(Duke, Baron, etc.) and my redoubted lord, has sent me to you on account of the great chivalry and prowess that he knows is in your very noble person. In all love and friendship, and not out of any ill will, he wishes to hold a tourney and bouhort of arms before ladies and damsels; and to signify this he sends you this token, which is appropriate for this.”
Letter:
Very noble and
powerful_____________(Duke so and so),
I recommend myself to you and your household. I am sending this letter on
account of the great chivalry and prowess that I know is in your very noble
person. In all love and friendship, and not out of any ill will, I wish to
hold a tourney and bouhort of arms before ladies and damsels; and to signify
this I will send you this token, which is appropriate for this. I have provided
the blazons of four knights and squires, so that you may say if you agree
these are acceptable as judges. Written under my hand in the Barony of Loch
Soilleir, in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. Date
The Challanged reply should state:
“As for the judges whose blazons you have shown me, I find them pleasing. And as to this you will carry them letters of credence from me. Also I want you to ask ___________________(Challengers name) to have them write on their part that they are willing to accept, and also to tell me the day and place of the tourney as soon as possible.”
The Pas de’ Armes Declaration
The declaration for a challenge tourney between two lords shall state the following:
“Let all
princes, lords, barons, knights, squires and men-at-arms of the Kingdom of
Ansteorra, and all other known world kingdoms, who are not banished or enemies
of the king our lord, may God save, know that on the _________________(Date),
at ______________________ (Location/event), there will be a very great festival
of arms and a very noble tourney with mass weapons, and rebated swords, appropriate
armour, with crests, coats of arms covered with the arms of the noble tourneyers,
as is the ancient custom;
Of which tourney the captains are the very noble and powerful lords and my
very redoubted ________________________ (Challanger) appellant and __________________________
(defender) defendant;
And at the tourney there will be noble and rich prizes given by the ladies and damsels. Moreover, I announce to all of you princes, lords, barons, knights, squires, and men-at-arms who intend to participate in the tourney that you must come to the inns the day before the touney, and display your arms at the windows, or send your name, and blazon by letter to the Chalice King of Arms two days before the tourney, as a courticy to our judges and harolds.”
The declaration for an open challenge tourney shall state the following:
